L9 Fault Code – VRF Wall Controller Indoor Unit Quantity Mismatch (XE70 / H1 H2 Wiring)

This equipment must only be installed, commissioned, serviced and repaired by suitably qualified and licensed personnel.

Particular care must be taken when working around electrical systems, refrigerant circuits, moving parts, roof spaces, ceiling spaces, confined spaces and working-at-heights hazards where applicable.

Do not proceed if safe access, required clearances, confined space risks or appropriate safety controls cannot be achieved and maintained.

Safety takes priority over diagnosis, repairs, installation schedules and customer expectations. If the task cannot be completed safely, it must not proceed until the risks have been adequately controlled.

Description

L9 = Group-controlled indoor unit quantity mismatch

This fault occurs when the number of indoor units connected does not match the controller settings, or the system cannot correctly detect all units.

What you will see

L9 displayed on:
- Wired wall controller
- Indoor unit display
Note:
- The outdoor unit may not show L9
- Fault commonly appears during commissioning

Common Causes

Incorrect number of indoor units set in controller
Missing or incorrect H1/H2 communication wiring (daisy chain)
Indoor units not connected or not detected
Controller configured after debugging started (too late)

Important (Commissioning Tip)

The controller settings MUST be set first
If not:
- Debugging may not start
- Debugging may freeze or hang

Quick Checks

Confirm wiring
- Check H1/H2 wired between all indoor units
- Ensure proper daisy chain (not star wired)

Check indoor unit count

Count actual connected indoor units

Check controller setting

Go to:
Project Settings → Number of IDUs
Ensure it matches actual units

Power cycle system

After correcting settings/wiring

Fix

Set the correct number of indoor units in controller
Ensure all indoor units are connected on H1/H2 network
Restart system and recommence debugging

One controller can control multiple indoor units, but must match configuration
Maximum group size is limited (system dependent – commonly up to 16 IDUs per controller)
